How Long Does It Take a Locksmith to Make a Car Key?

When you're stranded without a key, the first question is usually "how long is this going to take?" The honest answer depends on your key type and vehicle — but for most cars, a mobile locksmith can have you driving the same visit. Here's what to expect.

The short answer

For most common vehicles, a mobile automotive locksmith makes and programs a working car key in roughly 20 to 60 minutes on-site, once they arrive. Simpler keys are faster; high-security and very new fobs take longer. The arrival time to reach you is separate — often within the hour, depending on local availability.

How long by key type

Key typeTypical on-site time
Basic mechanical key (no chip)A few minutes to cut
Transponder (chip) keyAbout 20–30 minutes
Remote-head key (key + buttons)About 30–45 minutes
Smart / proximity / push-to-start fobAbout 45–90 minutes

These are general ranges for a single key — your vehicle and the locksmith's equipment determine the exact time.

Why a modern key takes longer than a copy

Cutting the metal blade is the quick part. The time goes into programming: pairing the chip or fob to your car's immobilizer so the engine will actually start. The locksmith connects to the vehicle's computer, and on many cars there's a built-in security wait — a deliberate timing delay the manufacturer requires before a new key can be added. That waiting period is by design and can't be rushed.

What can add time

How to make it faster

  1. Give your exact year, make, and model on the call — and the VIN if you can — so the locksmith arrives with the right blank and tools.
  2. Mention if you still have a working key. Making a spare from an existing key is quicker than an all-keys-lost job.
  3. Have ID and proof of ownership ready so verification doesn't hold things up.
  4. Be reachable at the car. The vehicle has to be present for programming — it can't be done away from it.

Locksmith vs. dealership timing

A dealership can always make a key, but it often means towing the car in and waiting for an appointment — sometimes days for an ordered fob. A mobile automotive locksmith comes to your location and typically completes most makes and models the same visit, which is usually both faster and cheaper. For a small number of very new or luxury vehicles, certain keys are dealer-only; a good locksmith will tell you upfront if that's your situation.
